Chapter 45
Birth of Susy (1872)
In the middle of March, 1872, Livy and I welcomed our second child and first daughter. Olivia Susan Clemens was named for her mother and her aunt Susan Crane. As her mother had been, Susy—as we usually called her—was born in Elmira, New York.
It was such a relief to us that Susy was robust and healthy. Langdon had been sickly from the time of his birth, and so the healthiness of this new addition to our family was a welcome change and a respite from worry. However, Langdon was still not entirely healthy.
EDITOR’S NOTES: Had the new baby been a boy, it would have received the name Henry, for Twain’s younger brother who had perished in the 1858 steamboat accident.
