In the two weeks since What the World Needs Now is More Proofreaders and Editors, there have been several more headscratchers printed, to wit:
How can the Raiders be winless and have a four-game winning streak? Also, it indicates in the story that the game hasn’t been played yet (“A win over the 0-3 Lost Wages Raiders on Sunday would give…”), but prior to that it says, “This is how the Denver Broncos beat…” So … I guess they meant, “This is how the Denver Broncos could beat…” or, if making a bold prediction: “This is how the Denver Broncos will beat…”
It should read “Belarusian,” not “Belaurusian.” By the way, “sceptical” looks wrong to me, but it is (alas!) an accepted alternate spelling of “skeptical” in the UK.
Rodgers (Jimmie or Paul, maybe?) makes long-awaited London what? Debut, I presume. But not only was a word left out, it wasn’t fixed even after the article was updated! Or perhaps the first version was right?
“felling bad”? — did viewers become rotten loggers after watching this guy pitch? If it had been a story about Bob Feller, I would have assumed it was a pun, but “Rapid Robert” hasn’t played for well over half a century.
This statement that the touchdown pass Aaron Rodgers recently threw to Marcedes Lewis was the first one he’s ever chucked to a first-round draft pick makes me want to snatch myself bald-headed. It has been almost three years since Aaron Rogers heaved his first touchdown pass to a first-round draft pick — to this same Marcedes Lewis!
By the way, why is the word “former” used above? Saying someone is a former Nth-round pick is either wrong (once an Nth-round pick, always an Nth-round pick) or redundant (everyone is a former pick once the selection has been made).
Was the editor drunk, asleep, on the toilet, or what? Presumably, the missing first word should be “Russia” or “Putin” or “Moscow” or “Musk” or something…
Two errors for the price of one: the State of Maine has an “e” on the end, and “the a” should probably be “a” (although it could be “the” if there’s only one seafood watch group, in which case they should probably just name it). I don’t mind the “red-listing” pun, though.
Isn’t it obvious that if it’s the cat’s first start since the 2020 season, it’s also his first start this (2022) season? Why not just say, “making his first start since the 2020 season”?
I like the Guardian (a lot!), but “for powerful that”?!? Apparently, it should have been “more powerful than.”
More anon.
