I would like to have a new bass; a better bass guitar than the one I currently own. In reality, though, the one I have is good enough for me. In fact, it’s probably a better bass than I am a bass player. So if anything, it deserves a new bassist more than I deserve a new bass.
What I'd really like to have, though, is an impossibility, because there’s no such thing, and there never will be any such thing. What I'd really like to have is a time machine.
H.G. Wells wrote a book about a time machine. Many others have written on the subject, too. Even the quintessential rock band, Grand Funk, did (they had a song with that title).
If there were such a thing, and you had access to it, where would you go? Or better said, when would you go? That is to say, what date would you choose, and when would you leave for then and there (if you could choose the spot, too)? Would you travel into the past, either to rectify wrongs (done by yourself or others), or just to observe something interesting — or would you go into the future, and if so, what would you expect or hope to see there?
How far into the past or the future would you like to go, and why? Or do you think the present is best? Optimists believe that we live in the best of all possible worlds. Pessimists fear the optimists are right.
So, where to, and when? Feel free to leave a comment.
