As a rematch of the Battle of the Alamo, which the Texans lost on February 23, 1836, it went well for the Texans on this date of that some year, less than two months later: A surprise attack led by Sam Houston led to the defeat of the Mexican army, with many taken captive, including their General Santa Anna, who was then forced to accept the independence of Texas.
The battle was short and sweet for the Texans, only lasting eighteen minutes.
Sam Houston became president of the “Lone Star Republic” and wanted Texas to join the United States, but that didn’t take place for another nine years, in 1845. And then only 16 years after that (in early 1861), the slave State of Texas seceded from the Union.
Questions: When did Texas re-join the United States? Which U.S. State is larger than Texas? Which other U.S. States would also be larger than Texas if they were flattened out? Have you ever had Tex-Mex cuisine? If so, which food do you like better: Mexican, Tex-Mex, or Texas Road House fare? Have you read Larry McMurtry’s book Lonesome Dove? Have you watched the miniseries based on that book? Would you rather live in Texas or Montana? Do you have a preference between the Dallas Cowboys and the Houston Texans? Do you remember the Houston Oilers?
