A quarter of a millennium ago, the U.S. Army was founded. The Continental Congress wanted a few good riflemen to serve for one year. Specifically, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia were selected as the places where these companies were to be recruited from to join the larger group in Boston.
This buildup was in preparation for a likely confrontation with “mother” Britain.
The next day, George Washington was selected to be the leader of this amalgamated corps.
