Before today, I didn’t even know there was a genre of literature called “cli-fi,” but today I came to realize that I am the author of a novel that fits squarely into that “climate fiction” category.
Previously, I thrashed about for which genre “Taterskin & The Eco Defenders” fit into, and the closest match I could come up with was “science fiction” — which is normally a type of literature that is anathema to me — and “fantasy,” which is also a style of writing which normally doesn’t appeal to my sensibilities.
But cli-fi! Yes, that’s what “T&tED” is.
The article I read which talked about the genre appeared in the New York Times. It mentioned that many people are disappointed that most cli-fi is dystopian, with few if any utopian examples available.
T&tED is, though, definitely on the utopian end of the pessimistic/optimistic scale. It is still fantasy, to be sure, as it features time-traveling talking animals as its heroes, but the fable represents a more down-to-earth view of the future than what it appears to offer on the surface — from my perspective, anyway; YMMV.
