In the last installment, #3, I showed how you can use the Bing Maps site to find coordinates of historical places (which have changed names or may not even still exist). I will show this time a similar set of maps created with Map-O-Matic (my Widows app which is available from the Microsoft Store). These maps show historical locations, but in three different permutations, based on how much land/detail I want to show.
To be more specific, these maps show the birthplaces or hometowns of the Biblical Apostles of Jesus Christ. Those for whom the hometowns are known, that is.
The hometowns of three of the apostles are apparently unknown, namely James “The Less” (AKA James the son of Alphaeus), Thaddaeus (AKA “Judas, not Iscariot”), and Matthias (the replacement for unfaithful Judas Iscariot).
So the information for showing all of the apostles (including Judas Iscariot and the two apostles who were not hand-picked by Jesus, namely Matthias, who replaced Judas Iscariot, and Saul of Tarsus (Paul), who became a Christian after Jesus’ death as a human, comes from this text file:
Red~Bethsaida (3: Simon Peter, Andrew, Philip);32.910000;35.631000
Blue~Capernaum (4: James and John Boanerges, Thomas, Matthew Levi);32.881110;35.575000
Chocolate~Cana (2: Bartholomew/Nathanael, Simon the Canaanean);32.745000;35.338330
Orange~Tarsus (1: Saul later renamed Paul);36.913075;34.896532
Green~Kerioth-hezron (1: Judas Iscariot);31.344952;35.124374
…and looks like this (with added captions):
Including “the apostle to the Nations” (Saul/Paul), who was from Tarsus, in modern-day Turkey, causes Bethsaida to be partially hidden behind Capernaum (the blue pushpin with “2” on it), so I made another map excluding Paul to avoid this problem. I added Jesus’ birthplace of Bethlehem and his hometown of Nazareth, too. Here is the text file with the pushpin’s hover text and coordinates:
Purple~Birthplace of Jesus, in Autumn;31.705841;35.205349
Purple~Hometown of Jesus;32.699993;35.299732
Red~Bethsaida (3: Simon Peter, Andrew, Philip);32.910000;35.631000
Blue~Capernaum (4: James and John Boanerges, Thomas, Matthew Levi);32.881110;35.575000
Orange~Cana (2: Bartholomew/Nathanael, Simon the Canaanean);32.745000;35.338330
Green~Kerioth-hezron (1: Judas Iscariot);31.344952;35.124374
…and here is that captioned map:
Finally, I created a map which includes only the apostles who remained faithful (which excludes Judas Iscariot) and who were hand-picked by Jesus (which excludes Matthias, who replaced Judas Iscariot) and Saul/Paul. The text file to create it “is left as an exercise to the reader” (it is a subset of those previously shown):
Hopefully these maps proved interesting to you and/or give you ideas on how you can use Map-O-Matic.
