This is a very unusual song — musically speaking, at least. It changes between several time signatures, not just the typical 4/4 but also 3/4 (“waltz time”), 6/4, and (most often) 7/4. The only other rock song I’m aware of in 7/4 is a Rush tune named “Limelight” (which I wonder if they wrote as sort of a Canadian “answer” to this song).
While the bass line is prominent, my favorite part of the song is the saxophone solo. The guitar solo, which plays over a rather bombastic bit of bass playing, sounds to me now (I didn’t notice it when the song was new) as if it was inspired by Richie Blackmore’s playing on Deep Purple’s Machine Head album (that supergroup’s magnum opus/masterpiece/pièce de résistance).
Last week’s song was “Take On Me” by a-ha
