Like REO Speedwagon, I preferred the earlier, more raw, versions of this cat’s music (when he fronted a Frisco Blues Band in the ‘60s). When he changed his style, he became much more popular, though. I had the album this song came from; and the next one, which was, I think, even “bigger” (had more sales).
As for REO, I’ll take “Ridin’ the Storm Out” over “Keep on Lovin’ You” and “Take It on the Run”; I also prefer this cat’s earlier work, such as “Goin’ To Mexico,” “Living in the USA,” and “Space Cowboy” to his big hits that came later. This song was sort of a midpoint between the earlier art and the more commercial stuff to come.
As a whippersnapper, he knew “The Wizard of Waukesha,” Les Paul (a family friend).
Last week’s riff was from the song “Sir Duke” by Stevie Wonder
