These cats were a blues band (Peter Green wrote “Black Magic Woman” while a member) before they morphed into a pop group and hit machine. Their eponymous album (signaling a change in musical direction) had a few hits, and then their next one with this revamped lineup basically took over the radio for a year or two. Like the Eagles, you might think their early work was artistically better than their more commercial stuff that came later, but they say there’s no arguing with success. I don’t believe that (true success is not valued in dollars), but I admit that I like both “versions” of this band that was named for their drummer and bassist.
