PREAMBLE to the Novella "Quedly Dake and His Quest to Conquer the Globe"
From Book 3 of the “Taterskin & The Eco Defenders” Trilogy
Quedly Dake was not satisfied. Unlike all of his neighbors, he was not happy being part of an egalitarian society. He didn't want to be just equal to those around him; he wanted to be celebrated, revered, honored, even feared. Quedly wanted to be, not just a big fish in a small pond, so to speak (after all, he was a human, and not a fish), but he wanted to be the biggest “fish” in the ocean of humanity. To continue with the metaphor, Quedly wanted to be not a lion, but a whale; not only that, he wanted to be the biggest whale of all, the biggest whale that ever lived.
Abraham Lincoln said that by the time a man turns 40, he is responsible for his face. Although Quedly was only 25, his countenance already reflected his inner self, revealing his sneaky, snarly, snarky, sleazy character.
I, Taterskin, the yellow Labrador Retriever you may already know from my books Wonders Never Cease and Tell It To Future Generations about the Eco Defenders, will tell you now how Quedly went about reaching his goals and what we, the Eco Defenders, then did about it.
It was the year 2525. My family and I (Rovette the Golden Retriever and our four pups) and many of the Eco Defenders were enjoying a wonderful and peaceful existence in northern California (outside of Zenia, near the Trinity Alps, to be specific). We weren’t expecting anything bad to happen. Each day was pretty much like the day before. In that sense, there wasn’t much variety, but who needs variety when you’re happy, content, even elated?
We thought these conditions were going to last forever, but one day everything changed.
