Serialization of the Novella "Quedly Dake and His Quest to Conquer the Globe" — Chapter 1 of 25
From Book 3 of the “Taterskin & The Eco Defenders” Trilogy
The change didn’t just happen from one day to the next — everything changed from one second to the next! I was teaching my pups Goldie, Dab, Panny, and Fona (Goldilox, Jehonadab, Paniagua, and Xylophona, to use the names on their whelp certificates) to fetch sticks thrown into the lake when, all of a sudden, the sky turned dark, a thick, gloomy fog filled the valley, the temperature dropped from pleasantly warm to damp and coldish, and a feeling of dread engulfed us. The pups all clambered up the bank of the river towards their mother Rovette and I, searching our eyes for clues as to what was going on, what had gone wrong. I tried to put on a brave face and reassured them everything would be fine. I told them to stay where they were and that I would be back soon.
Immediately I started off to find Alexis the African Grey Parrot (the smartest animal I know) and Albert Spartacus Joad, a mechanical engineer who also happens to be my best human friend. If anybody knew what was happening, it would be them.
I found Alexis and Albert soon enough, who were also out and about trying to figure out what was happening. The gloomy weather was one thing, but the palpable feeling of dread that permeated the atmosphere was something we had not experienced in a very long time, and we were at our wits’ end trying to deduce the meaning of it.
Just as I was about to turn around and go back to my family, who were probably worried and wondering why I was taking so long, Stripes the Bengal Tiger and his “little sister” Marmalade the Orange Tabby kitten came running up to us. Marmalade, having much shorter legs, had jumped up onto Stripes’ back so as not to fall behind and be left in the Tiger’s dust.
